First ACC Weekend

What’s up everyone?  Hope everyone has been able to make it out to some of the games at the Doak.  This past week we played Radford twice and beat them both times.  For game one we won 6 to 3 and had “VW” Vance Williams on the mound.  He pitched a stellar outing and had the visiting team guessing.  He only allowed 2 hits in 6 innings and struck out 5.  Cameron “Caves” Connor carried the bats and went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and 4 RBIs.  Game 2 we won 8 to 1 with great pitching and hitting again.  I have to give a shout out to Pratt “fatboy” Maynard for a long bomb he hit in the sixth.  Today we have our first ACC game of the year.  We are going to the Durham Bulls Stadium to play the Duke Blue Devils.  The games this weekend are at 6pm tonight, 2pm Saturday, and 1pm Sunday.  I hope to see many fans coming out to support us for our first ACC series.

Great Weekend of Baseball!

Hey everyone-

We just got back in town from Coastal Carolina’s annual “Baseball at the Beach” Tournament, in Myrtle Beach, SC. I apologize for not having updates during the weekend; the internet at our hotel was close to nothing, which makes it hard to post. This is the second year in a row we’ve gone down there for the tournament, and I have to say that it has been a great event both times. We played well all weekend, coming away with wins in 2 of the 3 games. There was a great turnout from all of the fans this weekend, which definitely helps. It’s a great feeling to go on the road and have so many of the Wolfpack faithful make the road trip with us.

On Friday, we beat Pacific, with a score of 13-4. Josh “Texas” Easley started the game and gave us 4 innings of work. I came in for Josh in the 5th and pitched an inning of relief. Rob “Cham-Rock” Chamra came in after me and threw 3 great innings, striking out 6. Nick Rice came in and pitched a solid 9th inning to finish off the game. Offensively, Brett “B-Dub” Williams had 5 RBI’s with a homerun, while Chris Diaz had 4 RBI’s on a pair of hits.

On Saturday, we faced #18 Cal, a very solid team. We lost 4-0 and were shutout for the first time this year. Cory “Money Maz” Mazzoni started for us on the mound and pitched 7 1/3 strong innings, only giving up 4 hits and striking out 6. Cal’s only big blow to us came in the 2nd inning on a 3 run homerun, which was enough to give them the win. Cal’s pitching staff was impressive, as they only surrendered 3 hits and 4 walks to us, with Pratt Maynard drawing 3 walks himself.

The bats came alive again on Sunday, as we took our 3rd game of the weekend from #17 Coastal, with a score of 12-3. B-Dub went 4 for 5 with 2 runs. Pratt went 2 for 6 with a triple. Harold “Big Rig” Riggins brought his wheels out, and had 2 triples, which drove in a run on each.  Tarran “T-Sonny” Senay had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s. As for the pitching performance, it would be crazy to say Danny “Heals” Healey was anything other than dominant. Heals threw 7 great innings, keeping Coastal hitters off-balance all day. Healey only gave up 2 hits, while striking out 6. DJ Thomas and Sass came in after Healey to finish the game, pitching an inning a piece.

The weekend was very good overall, and we came away with a couple huge wins. As for the weekend away from the field, I have to say that one of the highlights for me was splitting a Big Dipper pizza from Pizza Hut with Ethan and Brandon. If you haven’t tried one of these, it’s highly recommended by me. I’ll leave you with a couple of pictures from the pizza so you can see what I’m talking about.

Hope everyone had a great weekend, and thanks again to all of you who made the trip down to the beach. It’s greatly appreciated! Come out to the Doak tomorrow at 3pm for our game against Davidson.

Preparing for Myrtle

Well I am happy to say that there was a great turn out at the Doak this past weekend for the series against Elon. It was nice to see many of the seats filled with fans. The weather was great all three days. It was a first, at least for me, that the weather during the opening series was so nice.

Rey getting his workout in.

Monday was an off day for many of the players. Some position players and pitchers lifted and had treatments with our trainer, Ryan Holleman. Others rested to heal injuries.
Today we practiced drills to get ready for the upcoming tournament in Myrtle Beach S.C. During this tournament, we will be playing Pacific, California, and Coastal Carolina. We will resume practice tomorrow trying to polish the team for the tournament.
Tomorrow night our baseball team will support our basketball team as NCSU plays UNC.  We will be at the arena to pass out flyers and papers in hopes of enticing even more fans to come to baseball games. We will also be walking out on the court as a team during the game.

Check back later on the Wolvespen for updates and pictures from the beach tournament. We hope to see as many fans as possible at the games.

Win #1 and many more to come!!

Game 1 is over and were on the bus now to Elon for game 2. To recap yesterday it was a total team effort. Just a few numbers: 77, 20, 17, 0, and 1,600!!
What great numbers….
77 degrees
20 hits
17 runs
0 errors
And about 1,600 fans maybe more!!!
It was a gorgeous day and what a great turnout. Money Mazz started off hot than got into a little trouble giving up a 3-run homer, but in no time at all our offense came alive scoring 3 quick runs ourself. The runs kept coming from there and Elon managed to score one more with the final score being 17-4. DIAZ “is it” went 4-4 on the day with a great slash play that sparked our offense.
“Go DJ” Thomas made his collegiate debut and went a scoreless inning.
Brett “Flash” Williams hit the first Wolfpack HR of the season and was lighting on the base paths. He also had two great diving catches in CF.
Pratt “The man round here” Maynard drove in 5 rbis on 3 hits.
Captain Cincin had 3 rbis on 2 hits.

The combo of Rice, Price, and DJ gave the bullpen a solid performance after Mazz’ 6 solid innings.

Well it is about time to get off the bus as we pull into Elon. We have Josh “Friday Night Lights” Easley on the bump today and Healey tomorrow. Hopefully we can get a sweep, but one game at a time.

See ya out there…
Go Pack!

2011 Opening Weekend

Only a couple days until first pitch. We are excited and ready to get out and play another opponent (ELON) in some warm weather!! The forecast is showing a high of 77 degrees on Friday and that is great news.
The banquet was a success like always and it was great to hang around with the new inductees around the field all weekend. Their stories were great and their input about the game got a lot of us thinking. They had the chance to take batting practice and put on a decent show. With Brian Bark putting a ball about 2 feet short of a HR to right field and Tom Sergio just belting liners all over the field. It was great to see them out there and back at what they call “HOME.”

This week we’ll have practice and some bullpens to fine tune everything and be sharp for the start of what is going to be a great year.

So ELON on FRIDAY, we’ll see you at Doak Field at Dail Park @ 3pm!!

2011 First Pitch Banquet

Hey everyone-

The 2011 First Pitch Banquet is this Friday, February 11, at the Downtown Marriott. The banquet has been a big success in the past few years, having guest speakers such as Matt Holliday and Josh Hamilton. Last year we started a new tradition of inducting former Wolfpack players into the NC State Baseball Hall of Fame, and this year we’re continuing that tradition by inducting three more players. This year’s inductees feature Turtle Zaun, Brian Bark and Tom Sergio. Bark and Zaun were teammates in the late ’80s, while Sergio played for the Wolfpack in the mid ’90s. Zaun was a two-time All American during his career at NC State, as well as second in career homeruns (54) and slugging percentage (.711). Bark was a standout two way player in the outfield and on the mound, who recieved all-conference honors four times. Bark holds records for career games played (241) and consecutive games played (215). Sergio was a two time All-American, as well as holding career records for stolen bases (73), and runs scored (290).  As you can see, this year’s banquet features some standout players in Wolfpack Baseball history; so it’s sure to be a success.

As for practice, we’ve been having inter-squad scrimmages almost everyday at practice. The best way to get better at the game is to make practice as close to a game situation as possible; so we’ve divided the team, and it’s been extremely competitive everyday at practice. Everybody is now polishing up their pitches, and putting the finishing touches on their swings as we enter the last week of practice before the season starts.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the banquet this Friday, as well as opening day, February 18th, when we take on Elon at Doak Field at Dail Park.

Until next time…
